LICENSE REQUIREMENT

The following real estate licensees must complete 16 hours of continuing education to renew their license before their individual expiration date:

  • Affiliate broker licensees licensed after 1/1/1980
  • Brokers licensed after 1/1/2005
  • Principal brokers who supervise affiliate brokers

The 16 hours of education must be comprised of

  • A 6-hour course called "TREC Core" (This is one course. This is not a pre-license course. This is not an ethics course.)
  • 10 elective hours (multiple courses may be completed to meet the 10-hour requirement)

The 16 hours must be completed between the time you receive your license and the day before your license expires if you are a new licensee or between the day after your last expire date and the day before your next expire date if a renewing licensee. (Don't forget that renewal fees are also required in addition to completing your CE!)

MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENT

New REALTORS

Complete these courses within 60 days of application

  • NAR Code of Ethics (This is not TREC Core. This is not covered in pre-licensing.)
  • Fair Housing (This is not met in pre-licensing.)

Renewing REALTORS

Complete these courses every 3-year cycle as designated by NAR

  • NAR Code of Ethics (This is not TREC Core. This is not covered in pre-licensing.)
  • Fair Housing (This is not met in pre-licensing.)

Both courses MUST be SMTAR-approved to receive NAR credit. Courses may - or may not - also be approved for continuing education credit with TREC. We encourage our members to take TREC-approved courses so that they do not have to take additional courses to meet license requirements.
